Search Engine Optimization

3 REASONS WHY EVERY BUSINESS NEEDS SEO

It may seem counterintuitive that, even now, many businesses and entrepreneurs don’t know what SEO, or Search Engine Optimization is; nevertheless, this is, sadly, the case. SEO, simply, is the process of strategically optimizing your website to help it rank higher in search results.

It is absolutely crucial that businesses and entrepreneurs implement and manage their SEO strategies correctly because they can drastically increase their businesses’ exposure and generate more leads, which in turn, leads to more customers.

I’ve compiled a list of three reasons that illustrate why SEO is so important for businesses and which I have been implementing in my own businesses for years.

#1: You Increase Your Company’s Visibility

SEO is like playing “hide & seek” with your customers, except that you want your business to play it badly, ie., you WANT to be easily found. Your goal should be to set up your SEO so well, that when your potential customer counts to 100, opens his eyes and yell, “I’m coming!,’ he will see you immediately, standing in front of him.

More and more people are choosing search engines like Google before they make a decision about what product or service they want to buy. I read a study recently that said that 70% of smartphone owners used their phones to search online before making a decision to buy – either in a brick & mortar store or online. This is why it is so important for business owners, especially brick & mortar businesses to establish an easy-to-find online presence to help themselves to not only compete, but to thrive.

Invariably, this leads my students to ask me how I can help them improve their SEO. I try to break it down into as simple and easy-to-follow components as possible. When their potential customer is searching for a product or service, they type in a specific keyword or phrase into a search engine. Ideally, their businesses should pop up on the 1st page of the search results, because the higher they rank, the more traffic, or eyeballs, will see their opportunity.

I advise my students that, while their websites and landing pages are definitely important and should be ranked as high as possible, they need not neglect claiming their Google My Business listing for their business. Many of my students don’t even know about Google My Business and how to claim it, yet it is a very vital component of their SEO strategy. It can be done for free and it greatly increases their chances of showing up, not only in organic searches, but also in Google Maps searches.

It is often a constant struggle to remind my students that they need to provide as much detail as possible about their businesses. This is definitely an example of “more being better than less.” The great thing about Google My Business is that searchers can suggest edits to a business’ profile. These changes can be applied to their business’ profile. I always recommend that they log into their Google My Business account weekly to make sure that their business’ information is accurate and up-to-date.

#2: You Can Get More Quality Traffic To Your Offer

It is crucial that business owners understand that, while traffic is important, the ultimate goal is to get more qualified traffic to their website or offer. What is “more qualified traffic?” In a nutshell, it is people who are more apt to fit your company’s ideal customer profile, or “avatar.” An optimized SEO strategy will get more quality leads and generate more sales. The path is: get your website ranked higher, which generates quality traffic, which leads to more potential customers clicking through and visiting your website.

I’m a big believer in being laser-focused when it comes to your keyword strategy. I don’t believe in focusing on broad, generic keywords. I would much rather get 10 high-quality leads, generated from a more-narrow keyword(s) than getting 100 leads, the majority of which, may not be genuinely interested in my product or service.

#3: You Need An Optimized Website

This highlights the absolute necessity to make sure that you SEO strategy does not leave out a website or landing page that is professionally optimized to convert. Getting traffic to your offer is only a part of your overall marketing strategy. Make sure that you have a great landing page that converts these visitors into customers.

Summary

Recognizing the need for a quality SEO strategy is the first step for businesses and entrepreneurs to optimize their online presence. Increasing their visibility, getting their offers more easily found in search engines, driving better-quality visitors, and converting them with an optimized website are the foundation to a successful SEO strategy.

Once you achieve this goal, you need to continue to optimize all of these components to maintain your position.

While it may seem like a challenge to you now, small businesses and entrepreneurs can outrank even larger competitors. It just takes commitment and consistent implementation of a sound strategy. A consistent work ethic is often more important than talent or big pockets.
