Many people think of blogging and bloggers as the equivalent of an online diary. In fact, it is a major component in any online business. It provides visitors with an impression of your company in a multi-media dimension. It is the perfect place for your videos, podcasts, interviews, and marketing content.

One of the consequences to the recent global pandemic is that it has accelerated the movement of smaller businesses and entrepreneurs to move more of their business activities online. With the move online, it has become even more important for small businesses to develop a strong web presence to engage and communicate with their customers.

I have seen many small businesses and entrepreneurs struggle with creating a website that engages and converts leads. In fact, that is a huge part of my education and training. Yet, even that is not enough to gain an edge in this hugely competitive online landscape. I’ve found that one of the best ways for businesses to build their brand online is by consistently blogging.


One of the aspects about blogging that I like so much is that it is totally free. Imagine that! One of the most effective ways to brand yourself as an expert in your field is also completely free; yet, many businesses ignore it completely. They “don’t have time” is the excuse I hear most often. Ironically, this free tool is one of the best ways for business owners to drive traffic to their website; thus, attracting more potential customers.

One can merely search in Google, for example, to find studies which confirm that a majority of businesses that use blogging as a part of their marketing strategy acquire customers. It’s self-evident that blogging is critical to maintaining the financial health of these businesses; yet, many businesses refuse to invest the time to blog regularly.


I’ve made a list of five benefits that I’ve found in my own businesses, and which I teach to my students.


Benefit #1: Blogging Is A Major Component Of SEO

It’s absolutely crucial that businesses keep producing content. You can reference this in my other articles for promoting better engagement with prospective customers but there is also a major SEO component to blogging which shouldn’t be ignored.


All of the major search engines are love fresh, relevant content and blogging is one of the most straightforward and inexpensive methods for a business to create this. A daily blog post provides Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other search engine with fresh reasons to index your website.

It goes beyond content, however. I teach my students how to insert relevant keywords in their blogs that have to do with their product or services people are searching for online. Incredibly, this part of blogging is often overlooked, to their detriment.


Benefit #2: Blogging Nurtures Your Relationships With New & Existing Customers

I like to characterize my engaged customers as loyal customers. I have a number of different businesses and the buying timeline is different for each of them. Sometimes, I know that a buyer won’t have the need to buy something from me again for a number of months. Blogging gives me the opportunity to maintain the connection with them.

There is a lot of competition online and a customer’s loyalty fades over time unless there is a reason to maintain contact with my company. I do this by providing high quality content that they find relevant and worth their while to consume. I encourage them to comment, and I make sure that I respond to them in a timely manner. All of this is designed to build and maintain trust in our relationship.


Benefit #3: Blogging Establishes You As An Expert

I find this to be a very interesting phenomenon. I’ve worked with an entire range of students, from beginner solo entrepreneur to owners of multiple businesses. I’ve learned that “size doesn’t matter” when it comes to using blogging as a way to brand yourself as an expert. Large or small, blogging consistent and relevant content is the key to creating the belief that you are a customer’s “go to” source for information they are searching for in your niche.


Benefit #4: Blogging Connects Prospects To Your Brand

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of building your brand awareness. Blogging helps my prospects and existing customers see the personal side of me, beyond whatever it is I’m marketing at any given time.

A blog is a person window into who I am as a person. It allows me to communicate this in a way that is just not possible with the other elements of my marketing tools. People see me, my character, my vision for my business and my life. This fosters loyalty with people.

Benefit #5: Blog Posts Can And Are Shared

One of the best ways I can promote myself and my business is to share the link to my blog. If I create an interesting post that I feel will resonate with a lot of people, I can share the link to my blog, along with an intro to create intrigue. It’s a great way for me to help make my content more viral. Sharing this on my various social media platforms gives people multiple ways to share it and to get it in front of other people with whom I currently don’t have a connection.

In closing, I would heartedly recommend that you begin blogging consistently in order to increase your online content. It will help you to establish yourself as an expert in your niche. I would say it’s pretty much a necessity. When. You learn how to plant relevant keywords in your posts, you will put your SEO into warp drive.
